StarSkate

STARSKATE is Skate Canada's program which offers skaters of all ages the opportunity to develop fundamental figure skating skills, such as stroking, spinning, jumping and ice dancing. The STARSkate program consists of figure skating skills in four areas - Skating Skills, Ice Dance, Free Skate and Interpretive. Please refer to our STARSkate Information Sheet for more details about the STARSkate program and our Welcome to Junior StarSkate letter for specific details about our Junior program.

At MFSC, three levels of STARSKATE are offered to children and teenagers - Junior, Intermediate and Senior. We also offer Adult Starskate for skaters 18 and older. Skaters progress through the levels based on their successful completion of the various levels of Skate Canada's nationally standardized testing system.

Junior A & B

JUNIOR A STARSKATE program is specifically designed for those skaters just completing the CanSkate program. In this program, skaters gradually move from a 100% coach-directed program towards more skating independence. The Junior A session fee includes two (2) x 15 minute group lessons. Both group lessons are conducted by a professional skating coach. The balance of their session time is utilized through a private lesson with their coaches and/or working on their skills independently.

Minimum qualification: Completion of Canskate stage 6 or the equivalent, or CanSkate Stage 4 and has a private coach.

JUNIOR B STARSKATE is designed to accommodate those skaters who have already spent a full season in Junior A but have not yet achieved the minimum qualifications for the Intermediate level. The Junior B session fee includes two 15 minute group lessons. The balance of their session time is used for a private lesson with their coaches and working on their skills independently.

Minimum qualification: Completed one full season in Junior A and has a private coach.

Note: For the Junior A & B STARSkate levels, the club requires that there be an Adult, who is responsible for the skater, present in the arena at all times during the skater's session.

Skaters who attend a minimum two sessions per week will have more opportunity to continuously improve their figure skating abilities.

Intermediate

INTERMEDIATE STARSKATE continues to progress the skater towards skating independence and private coaching. Some Intermediate sessions include a 15 minute group lesson. The balance of the session time is utilized through a private lesson with their coach and working on their skills independently. Skaters must have a private coach at this level.

Minimum qualification: Passed one complete preliminary test level in any one of Free Skate, Skills or Dance categories.

Senior

SENIOR STARSKATE requires skaters to practice their skills and routines independently, with the exception of the time spent in private lesson(s) with their coach(s) or in a group lesson on some sessions.

Minimum qualification: Passed Junior Bronze Skills and Junior Bronze Dance and 1/2 of Junior Bronze FreeSkate test (i.e. Elements or Program).
